Environmental zones in the Rhine-Main-Area
We from GIBSON HOMES – your Homefinder in Frankfurt – offer our clients all information on the law of lowering the car emission output in the Rhine-Main-Region. No matter if you are renting a flat, apartment or house in Frankfurt or surrounding area, by law you are only allowed to travel within the environmental zone if you display the appropriate sticker on your windscreen, starting from 1st of October 2008.

This is not only for through traffic but also for residents of the environmental zone. This law applies to all motorcars and utility vehicles, independent of type of drive (with combustion engine - petrol, diesel or gas – and with electric drive). Also cars registered outside of Germany need a sticker to be allowed to travel into the environmental zone. It is hoped that marking vehicles that have low emission values will help lower the emission output in general.
The restrictions on vehicles in Frankfurt am Main will happen on a gradual scale:
From 1st of October 2008 only vehicles with a red, yellow or green sticker may enter the environmental zone.
From 1st January 2010 only vehicles with a yellow or green sticker may inter the environmental zone.
From 1st January 2012 only vehicles with a green sticker may enter the environmental zone.

The decision of which type of sticker applies to any vehicle depends on the emission-code-number stated in the vehicle registration document. Part I. In all German counties the stickers for the vehicles may be obtained in any officially recognized testing point, recognized companies checking exhaust emission and vehicle registration offices.
The Frankfurt environmental zone extends over an area of about 110 square kilometres bordering between several highways/Autobahnen, the highways are not included in the zone. In the West the environmental zone is bordered by the A 5, in the South by the A 3 and in the East and North by the A 661.
